Sports Registration Packet

The JCC Sports Camps provide expert sports instruction in an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie. Our camps’ primary emphasis is on skill and technique complemented by an appreciation of teamwork and strategy. Our camp is safe, wonderful and productive place where kids learn to improve their skills while having a great time.

Sports campers make use of the JCC’s athletic facilities: Outdoor ball fields, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, 25 yard indoor and outdoor pools, and gymnastics studio. All camps are co-ed. Sports Camps will include Thursday lunch cookouts for all participants.

SPORTS SPECIALTIES EXTENDED DAY MODULES

Bus Transportation from the Westboro/Shrewsbury service area is available at the rate of $14/per day/ round trip or $8/each way. No refunds for transportation services.

ALL-SPORTS CAMP

Week 2: July 1 - July 5 (no camp on July 4)

Campers will receive instruction in a variety of sports. Skill sessions, contests and scrimmage games will help campers improve their level of play in a fun and exciting atmosphere.

Baseball, basketball, soccer, Jr. Olympic skills competition, NHL street hockey, track & field, tennis, NFL flag football and MASS Wiff whiffle ball tournaments are just some of the sports to choose from during our All-Sports Camps.

Daily swim option plus elective periods will provide campers with a fun-filled experience.

The All-Sports Camp instructors will be members of the JCC Health & Fitness Department and other qualified staff.

Week 5: CIRCUS PERFORMING with...“GARY THE SILENT CLOWN”!

Circus performing with “Gary the Silent Clown” will challenge their fine and gross motor coordination as they improve confidence, and self esteem while they are participating in fun activities such as spinning plates, balancing, juggling, walking on stilts, unicycle, and much more. The program culminates with campers participating in a circus style show. Gary has performed extensively with Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. He is well known throughout New England for his clowning programs given each year at many elementary schools, including here in Worcester at Flagg Street School! This program will be a great complement to a wide range of other great sports and activities throughout the week.

RICH GEDMAN BASEBALL CAMP

Program Coordinator Rich Gedman...
Hitting Coach of the Boston Red Sox Single A Minor League affiliate Lowell Spinners and former Can-Am Manager of the Year with the Worcester Tornadoes. Rich brings 12 years of Major League experience to the JCC. He played with the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, and St. Louis Cardinals and participated in two American League Championship Series and the 1986 World Series. He was the 1981 Sporting News Rookie of the year and a two-time American League All-Star Catcher.

Special Guest Appearance - Dave Smith...
Camp Clinic Coordinator. Currently 3rd Base Coach and Director of Community Affairs & Education for the Worcester Tornados. Former senior instructor for the Chris Corkum Baseball Inc. programs of Connecticut and Western Mass. Former Varsity Baseball Coach at Murdock High School. Dave played semi professional baseball in the Boston Park League, Western Mass Tri County League and the Central New England Baseball Association.

SWING ANALYSIS at the JCC - Instructions from the Hitting Connection located in Uxbridge will provide swing analysis for all players; grades 3-7. Using high speed video analysis focusing on swing core movements essential for effective hitting.

This program provides interactive recreational gymnastics delivered in a fun, creative and safe environment. Incorporates tumbling, balance beam, spring board, dance and more. Perfect for the first time gymnast. Quality instructors safely challenge the limits of individual abilities.

Co-Director:

Massood Abolfazli...
A 20 year coaching veteran who trained 20 All--American Players. His Clark men’s teams won the Division III 1984 ECAC Championship, and competed in seven consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Under Massood’s guidance, the Clark women’s teams made 6 consecutive tournament appearances and in 1999 posted the only undefeated season in Clark women’s soccer history. Both the men’s and women’s teams were nationally ranked during his coaching tenure. Massood is a 4 time All-New England Selection and All-American Selection and a Clark University Sports Hall of Fame member.

Adam Strogoff...
Adam is the head coach of the Worcester Academy Girls varsity Soccer Team and has led the team to three New England Chamipionships in his eight years with the program, compiling an overall record of 102-14-23 in the process. Under his guidance, the team won the NEPSAC Class A title in 2011, its first year of Class A play, and NEPSAC Class B championships in 2008 and 2009. The team was a New England finalist in 2010, semifinalist in 2005 and 2007, and quarterfinalist in 2006 and 2012. In 2008 Adam was names the NSCAA Massachusetts Private School Coach of the Year. He brings years of soccer camp experience having worked at numerous soccer camps throughout the New England.

TAF JUNIOR TRIATHLON CAMP
Grades 3 - 6 AND Grades 7 - 10
Week 4, July 15 - 19, 9 AM - 4 PM

The TAF Junior Triathlon Camp is designed to introduce kids from grades 3-10 to the exciting sport of triathlon. Focus will be on skill development and fun. Instruction will include swim stroke improvement, bike handling and safety, run skills, warm up routines and nutrition. Recreational fun and games will be offered too. TAF Junior Triathlon Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is the promotion of a healthy lifestyle that young triathletes can develop for a lifetime.

Sara Levey, Head Coach...
Sara has been involved in triathlon since she was 13 which included racing in 3 junior/youth national championships. Recently she coached at the USA Triathlon Northeast Development Camp.

Matt Valyo, Asst. Coach, Program Director...
Matt is the Regional Athlete Development Coordinator for the USA Triathlon Northeast and Team Director of the TAF Racing Junior Elite Race Team. Matt is one of 5 coaches that runs some of USA Triathlon's Junior Skills and Elite Select Camps as well as the Northeast Collegiate High Performance Camp.

Prerequisites below are required prior to signing your child up!
-SWIM - Your child must have passed Red Cross swim level 4 AND...
7 to 10 year olds - Swim front crawl 100 yards (2 laps)
11 + Swim front crawl 150 yards (3 laps)
The program is meant to work on stroke mechanics and swim endurance and is NOT intended in any way to replace the instruction of a certified Water Safey Instructor.
-BIKE - Your child may use a bike that is in good working condition. Parents will be required to have the bike checked out at a local bike shop and have them write a note indicating the bikie is safe to ride. NO HELMET, NO BIKE RIDE, NO EXCEPTIONS. Please drop off campers and bikes at the JCC on Monday, July 15. Bikes will be stored safely for the week.
-RUN - Your child's sneakers should be in good condition. There is no need to go out and buy a seperate pair of running shoes.

TEEN FIT CAMP
Grades 7 - 10 (Ages 13-16)
Week B, June 17 - 21 & Week 9, August 19 - 23

Teen Fit Camp will provide an introduction to the various types of fitness programs offered at the JCC. This camp will provide the guidance and knowledge of certified personal trainers and instructors to help a teenager to be able to meet their fitness goals. Whether it is to be successful in sport or just develop an overall fitness routine each camper will finish will a workout program based on their goals. The program also counts as their junior fitness training so they can use the fitness center on their own. Non-members will receive a special rate on fitness memberships here.

Youth Fit Camp is a fun and effective introduction to fitness and athletic activity for kids. Campers will learn how to improve their coordination, endurance, speed, flexibility, and strength through adapted drills, games and activities using the various sports and fitness facilities at the JCC.

SUMMER SWIM LESSONS

Kelly Sampson and the aquatics staff look forward to helping your child improve their swimming skills in a clean, safe, and fun environment. We provide qualified instructors and off small class sizes to give your swimmer the best possible chance to improve.

Summer Swim Lessons will:

  • Prepare your children for a summer of fun and a lifetime of safety in all aquatic environments
  • Preschool programs focus on water exploration and comfort, with an emphasis on water safety
  • K-6 programs use the American Red Cross progressive swim program

Red Cross Swim Program

Level 1...INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS...This class is designed for children who have no swimming skills. Children must be able to follow directions and hold on to wall by themselves.

Level 2...FUNDAMENTAL AQUATICS SKILLS...Participant must have passed Level 1. This class is designed to give students success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float by themselves and recover in a vertical position. They begin to move in both alternating and simultaneous arm and leg motions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

Level 3...STROKE DEVELOPMENT...Participant must have passed Level 2. The object of this level is to build on coordination of the front crawl and backstroke and introduction to elements of the butterfly and fundamentals of treading water. Basics of water entries will be introduced.

Level 4...STROKE IMPROVEMENT...Increase the development of the front and backcrawl with increase distance and coordination. Build on the butterfly stroke and refine skills of the elementary backstroke and breaststroke. Basics of turning on the wall will be introduced.
