Director: Emil Ben Shimon; Israel, 2016;
96 minutes; Hebrew with English subtitles
When the women’s balcony in an Orthodox Jerusalem synagogue collapses during a bar mitzvah celebration, the close-knit Sephardic congregation falls into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways. This severely tests the women’s friendships and creates a rift between the community’s women and men. Featuring some of Israel’s top women comics, it is a humorous tale, rebellious but respectful in spirit, about finding a path to happiness and the subjectivity of righteousness.
Opening night film, Miami Jewish Film Festival, 2016
