5 Wednesdays, 10:00—11:30 am: March 30, April 6, 13, 20, 27; Senior Adult Lounge, Worcester JCC

Class Description:
Satire is a type of comedy that attempts to improve human folly through ridicule and exaggeration. Ultimately, it is moral and didactic. Nothing is off-limits as Socrates is mad a fool in Aristophanes’ “The Clouds” and in the most savage of English satires Gulliver’s Travels by Swift, which in turn spired Voltaire to write Candide. Stock comic characters, such as the ingénue, the cowardly soldier, and the dirty old man are examined.

Group Leader:
Steve White assigned these 3 satires at Bancroft School in an attempt to make adolescents understand such popular satires as Saturday Night Live.

Required Books:
1. Lysistrata, The Acharnians, The Clouds by Aristophanes
2. Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift 3. Candide by Voltaire, available at the Assumption Bookstore
